Kerafactor Scalp Treatment

ICON Dermatology & Aesthetics in North Bethesda, MD, is proud to offer KeraFactor treatment to our patients suffering from hair loss. KeraFactor is the result of six years of research into the cause and treatment of thinning hair. The proprietary formula is designed to resolve the growth-factor deficiencies that are typically associated with hair thinning and hair loss.

KeraFactor can significantly improve hair growth. Dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons alike have seen the power of this treatment for thousands of patients over the years. The product’s formula has eight different biosynthetic growth factors. These are the core hormones and other proteins in the body that govern hair growth.

These factors support the hair during the anagen phase. At this phase, your hair is constantly growing, lasting between 2 and 7 years. When you’re experiencing hair loss, there is a lack of growth in this phase (or no growth at all). KeraFactor seeks to ramp up growth by targeting dormant hair follicles. The serum encases each of the seven growth proteins in a special nanoliposome carrier to improve delivery to the scalp. This extra step means maximum absorption and effect.

Our favorite treatment for thinning hair, just got better!

KeraFactorMD Treatment Serum contains the growth factor, Follistatin, as well as the compounds, PDRN and NanoFluorosomes. These additional compounds in the updated formula  accelerate the effectiveness. This combination enables the maximum activation of the scalp-specific ingredients that promote a healthy scalp leading to hair that appears smoother, thicker, and fuller. The new and improved serum has DHT- blocking capability amplifying the results already seen with the original formula.

What is KeraFactor Serum?

Based on six years of extensive research to address thinning hair, the patented KeraFactor™ formula combines a set of biomimetic (bio-identical) polypeptides for scalp revitalization. The customized KeraFactor™ formula provides growth factors typically deficient in the scalp during hair loss or poor hair health. Other topical products include only a few growth factors, and no other commercially available topical consists of the complete set included in the KeraFactor™ formula. Our proprietary and patented technology allows the KeraFactor™ formula to contain significantly higher concentrations of each growth factor.  KeraFactor is the only product in the world which contains the growth factor, Follistatin.

What is a NanoFluorosome?

KeraFactorMD™ contains a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-androgenic compound wrapped into our nanoliposome, a new technology called NanoFluorosome™. The fluorescent compound can be activated by using a red light laser, which can significantly increase the proprietary compound's effectiveness, making it the perfect localized and specific 1, 2 punch against poor scalp circulation and DHT. DHT blocking is a critical part of any hair loss prevention treatment because DHT causes the hair follicles to lose their blood supply, shrink and die. The most effective way to reduce DHT is by taking prescription medicine called a five alpha-reductase inhibitor such as finasteride. This can systemically reduce the levels of DHT in the body, which can reduce the damage caused to hair follicles. While effective, some patients are unable to tolerate oral medication due to side effects.

How Does KeraFactor Work?

It works by delivering significant amounts of the essential proteins and growth factors needed for healthy hair. Extensive research has shown that baldness and thinning hair are associated with a lack of certain essential growth factors and proteins. If these materials are bio-available in the right concentrations at appropriate depths in the skin, dramatic improvements can happen.  Each of the KeraFactor growth factors are individually wrapped in their own protective nanoliposome, or “shell, for increased skin absorption. KeraFactor has the highest bioavailability of polypeptides in a topical formulation and affects all 4 stages of the hair life cycle. KeraFactor has been shown to:

-increase hair density

-increase follicle diameter

-increase total hair count

What is KeraFactor Treatment Like?

During our KeraNeedling treatment, we make very small micro-channels on the patient’s scalp and simultaneously deliver the KeraFactor serum using a micro-infusion vial. Our specialized device enables us to create these tiny channels with little to no discomfort. It is important to note that immediately following treatment, your hair may appear wet at the root. This will dry quickly without residue but we ask that you schedule your appointments accordingly.

This serum contains growth factors and proteins that will encourage the body to produce more hair. As it enters the scalp, this serum will enhance the functionality of your hair follicles. During the next several weeks, the thickness and quality of the hair should improve.

Immediately after KeraNeedling, the patient will receive Red Light Therapy, which contains  hundreds of 650nm Diode lasers. Studies show that the narrow bands of 630-670nm red lasers great ly increased scalp circulation, resulting in an improvement in hair quality for both males and females.

Am I a Candidate for KeraFactor Treatment?

KeraFactor treatment works best for cases of androgenetic alopecia. While the patterns of baldness for men and women differ, they both have a common genetic cause. KeraFactor has also been used to treat other forms of hair loss including telogen effluvium and CCCA (Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia). However, it is important to note that results may be less predictable when treating these forms of hair loss.

If you have noticed clumps of hair in your brush, hair falling out in the shower, or bald areas on your scalp, you might benefit from receiving this treatment. Scalp infections and other health issues can prevent you from using KeraFactor.  One of our board-certified dermatologists will examine your scalp and discuss your health to determine the cause of your hair loss and the best treatment combinations for you.

Is At-Home Treatment Required?

To maximize results, we recommend at-home treatment with KeraFactor Scalp Stimulating Solution daily. This serum contains a less concentrated version of the KeraFactorMD serum we use in-office. It is unique in that it contains 8 Polypeptides that include both specifically selected growth factors and skin proteins to help with hair and scalp health. This patented  complex helps to "turn on" weak or resting hair follicles and improve scalp circulation and nutrients to produce thicker, longer healthy-looking hair. The product is color-safe for men and women of all hair types.

The KeraFactor Solution also contains an anti-inflammatory and anti-androgenic compound, wrapped in a  nanoliposome technology to create a nanofluorosome. What makes the compound even more special is that it is naturally fluorescent, which means this compound can be additionally activated by laser hair caps or machines in the 630-690nm range.

Depending on your budget, we recommend patients use an at-home Red Light Therapy such as KeraFactor's KeraCap or the HairMax Laser Band to improve hair and scalp circulation and inflammation. If you do not want to purchase a Red Light Therapy device, you can come to our office for Red Light Therapy sessions. Combined with the KeraFactor's nanofluorosome, Red Light Therapy can now provide even better results.

How Many KeraFactor Treatments Will I Need?

Your treatment schedule will depend on the extent of your hair loss and your body’s reaction to the serum. In general, you can expect to receive about six monthly treatment sessions. To give your hair time to respond to the serum, you should wait 4 weeks between each treatment.  Maintenance treatments will likely be needed thereafter.

When Will I See Improvements in My Hair After KeraFactor Treatment?

Hair growth is generally a slow process. A few treatments may be needed before having significantly appreciable results. You are likely to see some positive changes in your hair growth within eight weeks after your initial KeraFactor treatment.

What Makes KeraFactor Special?

KeraFactor goes beyond treating symptoms of hair loss like low DHT. Instead, it attempts to treat the underlying cause of hair loss by delivering synthetic versions of these lost proteins directly to the affected area. There are no harsh added chemicals like sulfates or parabens, making it safe to use.

Is KeraFactor better than PRP?

PRP or Platelet-Rich Plasma is another effective hair loss treatment. Controlled trials have not yet been performed to compare PRP and KeraFactor.  At ICON Dermatology & Aesthetics, we believe in a multi-pronged approach to hair loss, often combining KeraFactor with other treatments such as PRP so that our patients get the best chance of healthy growing hair. If you have a sensitive scalp, or have a fear of needles or blood, you will prefer the KeraFactor treatment.

How Is KeraFactor Treatment Different from the Take Home Product?

The therapeutic serum for in-office treatments and the consumer product for take-home use are very similar in their properties. They both rely on growth factors. The main difference is potency: the serum is much more concentrated than the home-use product and is delivered deeper into the scalp. We recommend the use of the take-home serum twice daily in between in-office treatments.  For optimal results, we recommend using at home red light treatment three times weekly following application of the scalp solution.

When Should KeraFactor be Avoided?

Patients who have or have previously been diagnosed with skin cancer of the scalp should not use KeraFactor products.

Other contraindications include:

  • Active infections

  • Allergic reactions

  • Certain conditions, including certain forms of scarring/inflammatory alopecia (such as lichen planopilaris), haven’t been tested and may not be amenable to this treatment.

Does KeraFactor Contain Animal Products?

The KeraFactor serum does not contain any compounds extracted from plants, animal, or humans.
